Serbia :

The Cold War, thoroughly thawed out over the last decade, seems to have been put back in the freezer this week as both Russia and the United States made it clear that they were picking sides. In the years following the Second World War the two super-powers had satellite states across the globe, but the situation now can be observed in just one state: Kosovo. The Americans stand by the Kosovars they helped to liberate, while the Russians are with the Serbs. The stance of the Russians really must be inspected carefully though since it is hard to tell whether they support the Serbs out of Slavonic brotherhood, because of fears of separatism in their own state or simply to aggravate the West.

Cold War II: The Kosovo EpicWith the American army announcing that it will be providing weapons for Kosovo’s military, the Russians announced that this move was ridiculous. Dmitrij Rogozin, Russia’s representative to NATO, described the decision to give weapons to what he deemed “former terrorists” in an attempt to deal with the War on Terrorism as “funny, if not something worse”. Clearly the language used by the Russians is provocative since it could be argued that the only reason the KLA were terrorists in the first place was because they had no other means of expression given the Serbian repression their cause suffered. The use of the word “terrorist” by the Russians is a cheap ploy to exploit the failings of the American, and increasingly global, psyche. Terrorism nowadays is synonymous with Muslim Terrorism and all of the accompanying adages that go with it such as Al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden and beheadings. To try and claim or imply that the KLA were ever part of a global Jihad is absolutely unfounded given the at times worryingly blind adoration that the average Kosovar feels for the United States.

The Russians have also declared that they will begin to send humanitarian aid to the Kosovo Serbs. Is North Mitrovica to become Russia’s West Berlin? This seems like a ludicrous provocation towards both the government of Kosovo and the forces of NATO. The fears of the Serbs of Mitrovica is understandable but the decision by the Russians comes so recently after the death of a Ukrainian NATO peacekeeper at the hands of orchestrated mob violence on the part of these very same Serbs. The destruction and chaos in North Mitrovica was all too apparent and one must surely wonder whether it is time that our sympathy for the Serbs started to run dry. Instead of partaking in the many humanitarian projects which are now available for improving their lives, a large group chose to set about ruining their own city, culminating in the murder of an outsider.

As Russia continues its mission to regain its former power, all lead by General Secretary Vladimir Putin, will North Mitrovica, and possibly Serbia as a whole, become one of Moscow’s satellite states. The similarities between this current situation and that which followed the Second World War are uncanny. This is not to suggest that a Soviet Empire akin to the Warsaw Pact will ever be resurrected, rather that the Serbian popularisation of everything Russian can be compared with the adulation that Russia received in countries like Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia immediately following the Second World War. In that instance people became disillusioned very quickly because Russia’s “humanitarian aid” lasted almost fifty years and came with many strings attached.

Form the very begning Russia is opposing Kosovo’s freedom because of its own trouble spots in several parts of Russia, particularly in Chechnya Dagestanis and Ingusetians. And these regions should also have solid international support to breakaway from Russia. China, Indonesia and Sri Lanka are also supported the Russia on this issue. China is also concerned about its western Xinziang area where Uyghur Muslim are fighting a ‘liberation war’from almost thirty years.

USA helped Kosovo liberate. Tell me why did Kosovo needed liberation? Because Serbs were persecuting the Albanians there or for that matter other ethinic groups? It is a dangerous thing that the USA got involved in. Let me explain why.

The KLA instigated Yugoslavia and later Serbia to use brute force against its militant campaign that drew worldwide attention and further antagonised the Kosovars against Serbia (later on) leading to the situation now.

By helping Kosovo with its artificial liberation and standing by the Kosovars, the US is testing whether the Cold War can be revisited in the wake of a resurgent and powerful Russia under the semi-Soviet-style dictatorship of Putin. The US knows very well now that with the idea being floated in Russian circles to recognise separatists from neighbouring countries like Moldova and Georgia it will complicate the European theatre. That serves the designs of the US as its presence would be much needed in potentially volatile regions and maintain its Cold War I importance in world affairs.

Do not discount the Slavonic brotherhood when it comes to Russia's support for Serbia altogether. It is still a major factor why the ordinary and elites from both the sides find so much common ground in each other. Of course, for Russia it is just one of those small but important pieces that Russia would play every now and then in the geopolitical chessboard.

The concept of Slavonic brotherhood is bullcrap. Don't you know why Russia is playing things up on this issue? It wants to portray itself as the avatar of the old USSR and with oil money inundating its treasuries, Russia has a lot of dollars to burn.

It is highly a highly dangerous thing that is evolving in Europe. We can't afford to see a MAD doctrine balancing things across the continent. I wonder why this is happening before anything else. We condemn the Serbs, or we condemn the Kosovars. Why isn't any nation paying any attention to Russia's designs??? I am disappointed.

If Russia is not stopped now it will become a formidable opposition to the freedom loving West. If Russia was a true democracy herself things would have been acceptable. We must understand Russia is not a democratic country. It is run by pseudo-commies even today.

Kosovo is the first possible stage where the CW II games would be played. It is not on yet, but would be soon.

My vision: Russia would soon know that like its satellites in Europe, even Serbia would desert them. That would happen once the Serbian pedestrian comes to terms with the reality today and the golden future it can have if it has to pay the price of shedding the nationalistic cloak that is bound to wear out with time.

Graeme,

I aggree that 1389 is a long time ago, but that time scale isn’t the reason to ”get over it”, it is more about improving the current lives of people of all ethnicities whatever you choose to think about 1389.

Look at western attacks against the Jews, these date back to the killing of one man 2000 years ago. Anti-semitism is a characteristic of Western culture and yet we havn’t ”got over it” still.

Mandira, Yes, it was a characteristic of all countries opposed to Kosovo that they were worried about their own internal problems rather than actually expressing an opinion based on events in the Balkans.

Avadhut, There was nothing artificial about Kosovo’s need for liberation. Brutality had been a characteristic of police rule in the province. This dates back to the death of Tito from the Belgrade perspective, and earlier too under Tito’s rule where disappearances were a regular occurance. Read Noel Malcom’s impartial ”A Brief History of Kosovo” for more info.
